Major
Investment Program for 2001
The
Town Council have just announced their plans for a
major new Investment strategy for Birchwood in 2001,
2002 and 2003 to increase the level of Community Maintenance
resources and to provide much needed additional play
and recreation facilities for Locking Stumps, Oakwood
and Gorse Covert. The Community Maintenance Service
Resources will soon be increased with the formation
of a third team to continue our objective of providing
a regular litter and general community cleaning service
to make Birchwood stand out, as a clean, pleasant
and colourful place to live and work. This service
has continued to be developed over the past five years
with the original employment of one person to the
present four employees operating in two teams. This
latest development to three teams will ensure that
we can increase the frequency of services across all
areas and make a further significant improvement to
the environmental aspects of the Birchwood Community.
The second major investment development will involve
the installation of new hard surfaced multi-use play
areas and extra children's play equipment based at
each of the local primary schools. Offers to undertake
a partnership agreement have been made to each of
the School Governor Committee(s) at Locking Stumps
Primary School, St. Oliver Plunkett R.C. Primary School,
Oakwood Mount Church of England Primary School and
Gorse Covert Primary School to allow the Town Council
to pay for the installation of facilities within the
school grounds. The facilities would be available
to enhance our school recreation and play facilities
during school term times, but after school hours,
at weekends and during school holidays, the facilities
will be available for general community use. It is
envisaged that eventually each school could have both
a new hard surface multi sport play area and new children's
play equipment.
Key Developments
We will keep you informed in later editions of the
Community News on the detailed installation programme
but we hope to start with the first phase at Locking
Stumps within the next few months. Other key developments
involve new money for new footpaths to be installed,
footpath and underpass lighting to be enhanced and
numerous other local service improvements. (See more
within this Newsletter). The Town Council have also
agreed to purchase and develop the old farmhouse Barn
adjacent to our office in Delenty Drive. This will
provide additional low cost community group facilities
as well as enable our Community Maintenance Teams
to establish their workplace base and save a great
deal of money spent on depot facilities on the Industrial
Estate at Leacroft Road. The Town Council believes
that this investment using very modest locally raised
Council Tax funds, will ensure that much need facilities
in Birchwood will be introduced speedily and greatly
enhance the quality of life, which the residents deserve.
